Wett Dass...("bet that")

Or "How a German TV Show Got Over 300 Bathroom Doors to the Middle of Town"

On March 31st I went with some Germans I know from Campus für Christus into what is affectionately known as "The Office" to watch some TV show or another. I thought it was kind of a weird idea, but went along. Lots of these weird ideas turn out being quite a bit of fun, you know?

So I get there and essentially it's a TV show where people claim they can do weird things like put the top of a 10cm glass inside of their lips or drive a semi-truck above a river on two ¾" cables. Then they bring celebrities like Rowen Atkinson, John Travolta (and yes, all with simultaneous translation both ways), and so on to bet whether this person can indeed do the unthinkable. If they bet incorrectly they have to do something stupid like wear a bear suit and get petted by the children in the studio. I'm not going to lie to you, it was weird.

But then the announcers start talking about how one of them comes from Freiburg, and there's a big deal set up on our "Münsterplatz" which is the plaza around our cathedral. They go on to say that Freiburg is essentially a student city. Then the other says, "What do we think of when we think of students? Bathroom doors!" Now this was a little weirder than before, and I begin to doubt my German skills because that doesn't make any sense to me. But that's really what they meant, and the Germans I'm watching with are like, "yeah let's do it!" So we unhooked the bathroom door from the office, walked over to Münsterplatz and got into the main group, which was around 150 doors. Shortly after we got in they closed the main center area even though some 150-200 more doors arrived. It was awesome. Here are the pictures. Enjoy.

David with the door. English Cafe is a ministry of Campus für Christus here. It lets people come and get speaking or writing advice from native speakers.

Doors, and the people who take pictures of them.

This was pretty creative. Five people got together and made a little house out of their doors. Crazy Germans.
